Surfing Waves

Quick question. In a pinch (I don't have money to afford another pair of gloves) could a layer of Vaseline on my hands keep them just a little bit warmer, or will it just make a mess?

Just checking its not April 1.
Would have thought it would make it impossible to hold the board when duck diving / turtle roll/ etc. If you have a wet suit you can tuck them under, even a pair of marigolds would be better than vaseline.

I have wetsuit gloves but they are 3mm and I need more like 5mm that's why I was wondering if like on the inside of the glove it would help
