Hi all did my first ding repaire last night - a rail shater - did the best wax job I have ever done bought a brand new leash, took the board off the roof then boom it blew half way across Cayton Bay carpark. atleast I dont av to dry it out.

Any way I need it for this thursday coz am off to pembrokshire, didnt have time to get some one else to do the repaire and didnt want to pay £20 per ding = £40 (am a cheap skate) and also thought this long board is going to get dinged to xxxx so i should learn what to do.

Its a polyester board - i got some resin, hardener and glass sheet (think i shoud av got cloth?)

Sanded the cracks back, masked off, put activated resin on, put glass strips on, more resin then leaft to cure over night.

I think I have made a few errors.

Mestake No 1 - tryed to do both repaires with the same batch of resin and didnt have anuf time

mestake No 2 - put to much hardener in resin went off to quick

Mestake No. 3 I think - you can still see the glass cloth does this mean the resin has not boned properly?

Can any on advise how to finish this off - I do plan to do a nicer repire when I come back from me trip, how do i get the red coloure back is this in a gel goat i thiought the color was painted on the foam???

Any advise would be aprreciated cheers

Nos 3, If you can still see the glass cloth (as in white strands or woven cloth) then you haven't wetted out the glass properly, there are still bits of cloth which haven't been infused in resin. Use a paint brush, about half inch size, minimul resin, and dab the resin onto the cloth untill it all goes clear, don't flood it with resin. I use 124g plain weave cloth for repairs, i don't know if boards are ever made with chopped strand matt, probs too heavy (if thats what u meant by glass sheet).

Nos 1 and 2 are solved by using less hardener! Read the instructions for your particular resin, usually 1-3%. Also prepare and cut your glass cloth before mixing up resin, then just lay up the cloth without worrying about preparing cloth.

For a nice finish rub down to shape with course paper (80-200grit) then go through the grades of wet and dry (240, 600,800,1200) and don't miss a grade or it won't be as good a finish. Then depending on how glossy your board finish is finish with rubbing compound and then a polish such as brasso works well for a high gloss.

Sounds like you know the colours not on the foam, so either painted, used a tinted resin or a gel coat. Could try adding a pigment to the resin and see if it matches well, if you want a glossier finish probs best to paint a layer of warmed up resin with pigment over the top of the repair then wet and dry back.

If you've sanded it back and its taken a good shape and seems strong enough, but bits of the cloth are showing as white and/or furry then i would try painting over the repair with resin, using a brush and firmly dabbing it on. Possibly also warm the resin up very slightly before doing it so it is more runny, say 5/10seconds in a microwave before putting in hardener, may help it find its way into all the fibres. Definately worth a try before sanding all your hard work off! As for paint, i'm afraid i've no idea what kind of paint to use, but some form of car spray paint would suit i would have thought.
