If you can carry the board around and not hit the wall or the ground strongly. You really don't need it. However, if you want to cherish your board and hope it last a long time, I suggest you get a boardbag.

I really like them. I use two different kinds of day bags. One type is made of canvas. These are not very expensive and very durable. The other type I use are the silver-colored, insulated, polyethylene coated nylon tarp material. The former are like a big sock and difficult to remove from a 9ft or longer board. The latter have zippered sides that make it easy to remove or emplace any length board. The price range for these bags is $40 to $80 US. I boought a 7ft 8in canvas bag and a 9 ft canvas bag new for about $40 US. for about I bought two 9ft nylon bags used, but in excellant condition. One was $45 and the other was $52US. In addition to protecting the boards and making them much easier to handle, they protect everything else from the wax that is on them. If you decide to get a board bag, be sure to remove it before advancing into the water.

I like them if i load my board on my roof and drive on the freeway.

i've never needed one other than that though.

Board bags are essential the other way around too - to protect stuff from your board.
At some point, you'll want to leave your board inside your car on a hot day, and if you dont have a board bag, you'll come back to find a puddle of wax over the passenger seat.
