I have surfed all my life, but now I am getting into shaping and bout to teach my man how to surf...I want to shape him my first one....
he weighs about 210, is 5'9, nice big shoulders and strong arms :D
I have some ideas of what would be best for him...but I want some other views...
He does not want to long board...but he also does not want to sink in the water when on his board...
so whatcha gotz???

You can always go with something in the 7' range. Plenty of float and if you go with the right shape you can get a good deal of performance out of it. If/when he is good enough he can drop into the 6' range and find what he likes. If he is just learning then he should start with a long board.

width and volume is the way to go. The more float the easier it will be. The more width the greater the stability. However what you dont want is something out of proportion otherwise it'll look weird and that usually means tacking on a bit of length. My advice is dont shape a board yet but get him on existing boards and see how they work for him. Then you can adapt that design and improve it

a nice 7' egg would be a good board. I'm about the same weight and LOVE riding my friend's 7'2" Bruce Jones egg

I'm sure you'll do fine. Once you get a template made up it should be relatively easy.

Don't forget to take pics through the steps in the process so you can share. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
Wish I was shaping another board right now.
