what can you use to take surfing pictures or videos... i mean i cant exactly afford a giant camera with 10000s of lenses.. i know there is the go pro hero 3 ... is that the best camera?

UPDate:

well i can spend about 150 ish... maybe a little bit more... i plan on taking the pictures in water because if the camera isnt water proof then it isnt sand proof... and last time my camera got into the sand and it stopped working..

Do you plan on taking the pics only from in the water or from shore?

The pics I've seen from the go pro didn't exactly impress. If you want to be out surfing at the same time it attaches to your wrist and the guy I was with did manage it.

But even if you want to take pics from the water you will be better off with something else from a quality perspective.

What's your budget and what do you want to be able to do with it?

Do you already have a camera? You can buy a plastic waterproof case for it. The more expensive cases are designed to fit to specific cameras. But you can get plastic cases, which are like waterproof plastic ziplock bags, for about $20 to $30 on Amazon. Good luck man!

Have you looked at the pentax w20? Small compact waterproof camera, can shoot upto an hour of video footage with the right memory card.

same here, I'm looking for a compact camera to take some quality shots while in water... I've been looking around the market also, and the Olympus 1030SW really caught my eyes because it's so compact, and 10MP. Since it's not out yet (March 08), so there isn't any customer reviews yet. Thus I looked @ its older brother 795SW, and the feedbacks wasn't really good... it mentioned poor image quality in night condition (it's an expensive camera, so if it can take both water, dry and night photos will be great), a bit blur in water, and there have been cases which customers lost all their photos because some water went it, so it isn't exactly water proof... and there has been dissatisfactions with the image quality from some of the latest models for the last 1-2 yrs.

I've got a pentax optio w30, really good camera for both in and out the water, and the movies it takes are good too. I got in on ebay from hong kong cheaper but if you don't want to do that then you can get it at amazon or plenty of other places. Right now it's too cold here to try pics in the water as ideally you need bare fingers to take pics. I've seen plenty of vids on youtube of what the camera can do.
Had it in the water last week but fingers were gonna fall off but pics were good.

I've also bought the waterproof camera case from MSW, works well but my mistake was to let it touch the wax on my board and as a result the case got wax on it which messed up my pics! Roll on april so i can get plenty of pics in the surf without the akwardness of wearing gloves!

I can totally recommed the pentax optio w30 as a very good quality camera, which takes great pics, it's 7mp, you can get it for between £130 - £180. Totally waterproof and reliable so far! Sand proof aswell etc...
