Board as a Christmas present for my bf? Please help!

I am trying to decide what to buy my boyfriend for Christmas. He loves to surf and I know he would like a new board. Is this something that I can buy for him as a surprise, or is it something he needs to pick out for himself?

I know he wants a fish or funshape board that would be good for smaller days. He is 5'9" and about 170lbs. He currently has a 9'2" x 22'1/2"x3 1/16 GFG longboard, another long board at his sister's in CA, and a 7'2"x20 5/8" x 2.5" board that he refers to as his "short board" - though my understanding is that that length is a little long to be considered a short board? I think he is intermediate-advanced in terms of skill level.

I can only spend about $200-300, so I think I would need to get him something online or used. I was looking at a 6" fish board on ebay... do you think that would be good?

If I should abandon this idea, let me know! Thanks!

PS - I have started surfing recently myself and am frequently using his long board... I'd like for him to have another option besides the 7'2" board (when I am borrowing his), as it doesn't do well in small waves.

This is one of the boards that I was looking at online (they also have an ebay store). I have never heard of this company before...

My husband has sold every store bought board that I've gotten for him as gifts except for one that he keeps at his friend's house. Now I just let him order what he wants custom and then pay for it. He buys me boards for special ocassions but I think they're actually for himself, diguised as gifts for me.

Maybe you should let him pick one on his own.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up bringing it up to him and he said that yeah, it's something he'd rather pick out for himself. So, hope he likes ties! j/k Thanks again.
