ok soo im new to the whole surfing thing, im mostly into skimboarding
but anyways
im trying to make a skimbord/wanting to make a surfboard
and im wondering about what kind of resin to use

the thing says epoxy, but this other site says polyurathnae is good
but expoxy is like expensive crap
and polyurathane is for laminating
can i still use polyurathane?


and if anyone knows a site where it gives me a really good descritpion on making a board
bc the one on this site is confusing(kinda)

anyways also if anyone knows a good place to go thats around texas/south texas for skimboarding, or even surfing

The type of resin you use is related to the type of foam core used.

Not necessarily. You can use epoxy directly over either PU or EPS.

And it's definately possible to use polyester resin on the outside of a wood veneer board that has an EPS core.

The important thing is to keep styrenes away from polystyrene

ok well i have surfer steves video, but i lost it and when i was watching it i wasnt paying attention, but another thing i was wondering was since you cant use polyurathane over polystyrne, soo can i do a layer of epoxy then layers of polyurathne over the epoxy?

Yep. There's a few things you need to do a little different with an EPS core.

Basically it goes like this:
* Shape your core.
* Seal it with epoxy.
* Hand lam your glass onto the core (1:1 epoxy:glass).

Now there's a couple of options:
* Wait until the epoxy is gelling but not quite set and shoot a cheater coat of epoxy over it.
* Wait until it's completely set up, then rough up down to the weave with sandpaper and do a poly or 2-pac hotcoat. You can probably even pay an auto-repair shop to spray a perfect 2-pac on for you.

Naturally there are numerous variations and details on the theme, but that's it at a high level.

It'll pay to check out the Swaylocks forum if you want more detail/variety. Make sure you use the search functionality as there are a lot of gems hidden there!

bc ive already shaped the board
and i just need to order the epoxy

and is the hot coat nessecary, bc im kinda practiceing on a skimboard, considering i dont wanna waste a huge deal of money on an actual surfboard yet,

I get 423 results on "skimboard". Then try "epoxy"!

Yeah, just seal with a thinned coat of epoxy.

Without a hotcoat you'll be able to see the cloth and it'll suck water.
