Surfing Waves

In the fall 2008, im going to UCSB (university of california santa barbara) i've surfed 4 times before and i can stand up and ride a wave about 50 percent of the time, should i go ahead and just buy a used shortboard im thinking 6'8'' at play it again sports then buying a new shortboard when i get better? Or should i get a soft top 7 foot? Im 5'10'' 155 pounds.

don't get a shortboard or a sorftop

sorftop are ok for your first time out but u will not progress on one

shortboard will be alot of hard work too lean on

go for somthing like a minimal about 7ft6 min. this will help u to progress and when u are ready too move on, u will sell it for about the same as u paid for it. if u get a second hand one

is it okay to go shorter? will it make the switch to a 6'8'' short easier? and when will i know when i am ready for a shortboard?

Depends on the width and thickness as well
