white spirit rubbed on with a thickly woven cloth will remove the residue.

Here's the easiest method I know of.

Put it in the warm sun just until the wax is melting. Now scrap off with a wax comb or credit card or what have you. As Sar, etc say you now need to remove the residue. Us denatured alcohol (aka white spirit) and a cotton cloth.

Let everything dry. Now, immediately before you put the pad on scrub the area with acetone and dry with a cloth. Get the pad on within the next 15 mintues or dust and airborne oils will settle on it and it'll come loose sooner than needs be.

Like what he said above...
Sun to melt wax and wax comb. Some surf shops sell the Surf Pickle to take off the leftover wax.

A quick wipe with the wifes nail varnish remover will get rid of any traces of wax after you have scraped it off. DON'T USE TO MUCH and wipe it straight off though.
