Vintage surfboard painting/restoration

I have a 9'10" 1960's Dewey Weber that I am working on restoring. I'm reglassing about 70% of the board, so to make it look all original I need some way to paint it.

As I understand it, in a new surfboard the paint is applied under the fiberglass, but this won't work since I'm not reglassing the entire board, is there a good way to paint on top of the board? I've seen howto's suggesting spray painting it, and then applying a clear coat paint over top, but how long will that last?

Right now I'm thinking of spray painting it, then applying a clear coat of resin over top to protect the paint, or perhaps even a single layer of mesh+resin over the spray paint.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Anyways, depends on what you want it to look like. I'm restoring one this winter that is just clear with some resin work on the deck with a pinline. I'm going to tint the resin before I add cabo-sil after I grind out the spots that need it. It'll be tricky getting the color, but worth it eventually. Pinlines will be redone traditional style, resin.

Plus I'm gonna put a brand spankin' new gloss coat on it to make it look all smooooth.
