Surfboard Discoloration NOT from water leak?

Postby Patconn22 » Sat May 15, 2021 7:17 pm

I bought a used board that’s in pretty solid shape. There are very minor dings on and around the nose area as well as some discoloration somewhat close to the nose area. The discoloration has been there since I bought it. Like I said the dings are very small and I can’t tell whether or not the board is water tight because of the fact that there is some discoloration.

So my question is, is it possible for there to just have been some natural discoloration when the board was made? Could the discoloration NOT be a result of water getting into the board?

For some more general info, the board was made by a local shaper in CA then I bought it from a shop who was reselling it. The shop did not explicitly state the board was not watertight, which they normally do if it’s not watertight.

Dunno if u can tell or not but this is my first fiberglass board lol.

If you can flick or click the dings or cracks with your fingernail,, they are not water tight, capillary action allows water to enter through extremely fine cracks ,, the foam then yellows, an extreme sucker of water is the wooden stringer, a pin hole will do it!

Simple viewing it the stains are near the cracks= culprits found!
Post a picture somewhere can advise more clearly :D

Possible it had leaks and was repaired?
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I am not sure what the "discoloration" you are referring to.

1) Is it the lighter green on the left side of the nose in comparison to the right ? That could because of sanding down of the "Resin Tint" rail when they repaired the nose.

2) Is it the white-ish directly to the left of the wood stringer ? That is just the Q-cell filler used to repair the void left after the damage to the nose.

3) Is it the light green bleeding over into the white area ? That just seems like a less than perfect taping or cut lap.

Oooh that makes a lot of sense. I didnt realize that there had been a ding repair done prior to me buying the board. That makes a lot more sense!

Thank you for clearing that up for me
