Short John or shorty wetsuit?

Postby BaNZ » Thu Jul 13, 2017 6:42 pm

Time to get a summer wetsuit for my surf trip in August with Billie at Old man. I've never tried a short john before and since I don't surf as much as I did. I really lack any paddling strength. I was thinking that this would give less shoulder restriction and I would be able to paddle faster.

The cons is that I'll get sunburn badly and that if a shark gets me. They will rip my arm/leg off :D

My current collection is:
3/2 for summer
4/3 spring
5/4 winter
6/4- haven't used yet.

So I think a 2mm shorty would be useful for those windy summer days. The water is so much colder here compared to Taiwan!

BaNZ,
I've got a 2 mm shorty with short legs and short arms. I will lend it to you when you are here. Kinda like try before you buy. I like it for specific conditions.

Terminology wise can we call the short arm - short leg wetsuit a "SPRING SUIT" ? Calling it a Shorty gets confusing with a Short John. Lot of the Long John versions ( no sleeves and long legs ) being used right now in Japan.

I have a short john I use mornings when water is cold like right now. I like the freedom of movement.

Sure, Waiki. But, you're asking a lot from the feeble remains of my expired memory.

Billie, thanks for your offer! I have used a shorty before but never a short john. I think I'm going to go for a shorty(spring suit). Simply because I got flimsy arms and it would be embarrassing to show my skinny tricep. Even worse when I can't catch any waves, no more excuses on wetsuit being too tight!
