Is tbis board good for a beginner

Hello everyone,

I am a beginner surfer. I reside texas so there is not many waves. But i do go to Nland a few times a year and they are also going to open a second surfpark in waco, texas. Yes thats right the first two surf parks in america are going to be in texas.

Besides the point. I usually surf 3-5ft waves here and in corpus christi. Very beginner though. I can catch and surf the wave completely on a 7ft board. But the ones i usually have are funboard shapes.

I bought a used board its 6"9. But i dont know if its a gun or a shortboard. I know thT a gun would not be suitable (right?)

Please let me know. And any advice where i could find a used funboard for very cheap.

If you had to label that board I'd call it a big boy shortboard. It depends on your age and size as well; if you're 13, 5'3" and 100lbs and can ride waves with a longer board then that board could be a good fit. If you're my age and size (46, 6'1" 92kg) that board would not be the best choice for a learning board.


You are not a raw beginner; there are shapes that are easier to ride for someone who is learning but you bought that one so the next step is to get in the water and answer the questions you have. Ask first before you buy your next; after the fact is...............after the fact.

Hi Qc, welcome but one of us is a little confused, you say you are a very beginner but can catch and ride a wave completely?
Not sure what you mean in that??
The board is very gunnish and would need some power and more hollow waves to function best, its narrowness gives that away 18 or 19" at a guess and not that thick?

So help us help you!
Your weight height and what actual do in your riding.
Corpus Christi waves , are they mushy and weak on most occasions ( I'm in Australia so I don't know but suspect they are)
Do you ride across the face or completely in the white water?
And I have to ask N/land ? ? On that too ?

If it has a pointed nose- not good for a beginner
If it around 18" wide - not good for a begginer
If it had a really long leash rope- not good for the board.

The surf park gwnerates 4ft waves from face id say. I can catch the wave and ride but not move around much. I consider still very beginner. And also i am 5'8 and weight 130lb.

I do now realize this board seems too long for a shortboard. But that was intended since i am a beginner. Not sure abouth width. It did seem thicker than average shortboard though .

I am considering keeping this board until i become more experience and try it out when we get a hurricane swell if we do. Maybe able to score a 6ft. But i am fsr from this.

Do you guys know any website which sellS used boards and "SHIP".

NOT MANY BOARDS FOR SALE IN DALLAS AREA. lol

Waves are mushy in Texas, your 6'9" board might be okay for NLand, but not the gulf except on special occasions:
