Should I be worried?

Postby Carcharadon » Mon Nov 07, 2016 12:02 am

Hi all,
There's been a good amount of swell lately in norcal and I noticed this on the bottom of my board when I got home from surfing this morning. I didn't make it over one clean up set by the skin of my teeth and got sucked over the falls so I figured this must have happened from that. Is it something I should wory about and repair? I can't really tell if they're fully through the glass or just in the gloss coat, but I ran my nail across them and on some i could feel a very very slight ridge (like slight enough that i feel it might just be the gloss coat). And should I repair it how hard is it? I've done ding repairs but never full stress cracks. It's an 8'6 John b Mar hplb and my favorite board to ride so I don't want to screw it up. It's also glassed super thin (for a longboard)
There's a cluster of them that run across the entire width in the back third of the board on the bottom and then another weird cluster in front of one of the fins.
Thanks.

Yes, obviously structurally damaged. If you have another similar situation then it will result in greater damage if you don't fix it. I would take it to a pro and get it fixed. I haven't ever repaired stress damage like that but all the boards I have repaired were more heavily glassed. What I would imagine to fix it would be a layer of glass of the same weight as the original glass completely around the board after sanding down the resin to expose the fiberglass overlapping any damage by at least 2 inches. If the top layer is not damaged then maybe only the bottom layer but this part I don't know But if it were me I would find a pro repair guy to fix it. However I have never owned a thinly glassed board so perhaps you should wait to hear from others. I guess also you need to consider how the extra weight will affect your ride and consider riding it till it broke in two and then get another board. Being it's a longboard and the damaged area would be under your feet, I don't think it would matter but then you got a thinly glassed board for a reason?
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I borrowed a friend's board with twice the amount of shatters. He warned me it would snap. It never did, but it did get yellowed. If you try to fix it, it won't ride the same. Plus I'm thinking time to retire that 15 year old board, and keep it as a back up. Get something more modern with replaceable fin systems, for ease of repair, varying the ride and transportation.

Same thing happened to a 7'10" funboard I had. Scrape the wax off the deck of the board and check for any cracks along the stringer. If it cracked on the bottom from flexing, it could have cracked on the top as well. I took my board into a surf shop where the owner had patched up some dings for me before, but he was very hesitant on doing the repairs. It could have been out of his skill level to do a proper repair, but he told me that it wasn't worth fixing, and to just surf it until it died, I ended up selling it on craigslist heavily discounted.

Take it to a proper repair shop and see what they think, scrape all the wax off first.

Alright. Thank you all for the input, I've decided to take it to a repair guy. Now just trying to figure out how much the repair would cost should I do it. I've scraped all the wax off and yes the cracks are just on the bottom.

You will be just wasting time and money. The board will be heavier and not react/flex the same as before. Just surf it till it dies or keep it as a back up. Better to put the repair money into another board. As a repair guy myself, I would tell the same thing to my customers that want that type of shatters fixed.
