Stringer crack on new board after 3 uses :(

Postby YorkshireSurfer » Thu Aug 04, 2016 12:22 pm

At the start of the year I purchased a 7'10 circle one bamboo. I got it cheaper as it was and ex display board, purchased directly from them via ebay. I've been riding it up on the north east coast (UK) and im really happy with! It rides a lot smoother than my old bic!

After only my third use of the board ive noticed a small crack along the stringer. Its next to a small depression which ive figured out is where my left knee goes when i pop up (terrible habit i know - im trying to break the habit). There is also a couple of marks that look to be 'potential' future cracks. It doesnt look like there is any water ingress, the crack was under wax. If i run my finger over it i can feel it, it has broken the surface. Ive attached some pictures of the crack.

Im wondering if anyone can offer any advice? Is this normal? Whats the best course of repair? Will it crack again as soon as my knee next pushes against it?

Thanks

Ben

I am not familiar with the construction of that board but assume it is probably bamboo laminate with an EPS foam blank with a stringer? Anyway looks like the glass is broken which means you should glass it to fix it so that it is as strong as it was before you broke it.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I guess the idea is to glass it so that it will be as strong as it was before. You can do it yourself but if you are a novice it might be better to have a professional ding fixer do it. If you do it yourself then you need to buy epoxy resin and fiberglass or a ding kit that comes with that. Follow the instructions for mixing eopxy resin and make sure you measure the two part resin in separate containers or you will have a shorter time to work. There is also sunlight curing epoxy which can make it simpler to work but make sure you have epoxy since .......welll I am not sure but probably your board is made with epoxy resin. Anyway you sand down till the glass fibers are exposed for a an area at least a couple inches around the crack then cut a piece of fiberglass that overlaps the crack by a couple inches in all directions. Then tape off an area around that to keep resin from getting on the rest of the board. You will need a squeegee or something to press the excess resin out of the glass. You should probably look at a video of the process online to get an idea of exactly how to do it. or get someone else to fix it
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

The bamboo one website says its "Produced using environmentally friendly and sustainably sourced bamboo coupled with our state-of-the art bamboo epoxy laminating processes"

EPS High Density Pressurised Core
Innovative ‘Bamboo Laminate Technology’ sandwich construction
CrosslinkTM reinforcement material throughout with multi-layers of premium European fibre-glass
Premium European epoxy resin throughout

So sounds like it may be an epoxy laminate as old man says. I agree it should be repaired

I've got the pop up to one knee problem myself. You can see the indentation of my shin/knee in my Wavestorm. I've decided that I'm not riding my hard boards until I'm not popping up to my knee. I'm just about there, but I think I still need to gain some upper body strength.

Thanks for the replies guys. Guessing this damage is kind of normal then if using the knee? Or should i be contacting circle one? This is a good opportunity to really work on my pop up!

I will get it repaired as apposed to doing it myself. I live 2 hours drive from the coast which isnt ideal. Im planning a surf trip in october so will be plenty of repair places there. Would the board be usable till then with the Solarex temporary repair? Would be for 1 or 2 uses id guess.

Thanks

Ben
