Surfboard rack recommendation?

I need a rack that will hold two soft 8 ft surfboards. I don't know where to start for one - there's so many different ones and some are so expensive! If a cheaper one would do the trick that'd be great.

It'd also be nice if it would hold SUP boards and soft boogie boards, so i don't have to buy another rack. Although my priority right now is for 2 surfboards.

Do you mean a wall rack, or an upright rack or something like that?

If you can't find a cheap one, they are easy to make by yourself.

In the USA, the predominant manufacturers are Thule and Yakima. There are minor differences between them, but they both offer superior performance. I've got one or the other on my SUV. When properly secured to the vehicle, they will not fail.

Plain old roof racks and tie downs, if you are concerned a bit of padding (either board specific or just a pool noodle or a rolled up towel or glue some rubber into the cross beam). Make sure the board is in a bag

Over here in Australia I can't remember ever seeing anyone use a surfboard specific rack. Just whatever cross bars you want.

Nope, billie, we have a mini van and some sort of jeep (I forget what they're called).

dtc: I was wondering if it would be possible to just use the rack that comes on cars and use some bungee cord to secure it down. My dad said that might work but I was worried about it not being secure enough or it somehow damaging the boards. Or even if it would just be a pain to do every time we went to the beach.

I'll have to see if just tying them down would work and if not I'll look into either Thule or Yakima!

Do NOT use Bungee cords. Get some tie down straps.

Bungees respond to a passing 16 wheeler going by at speed , by twang flung snap splat of boards on the road following traffic finishes their demise. Tie downs .

Just don't ratchet too tight or you can dent the boards where the strap goes over the board

I use the built in rack on my SUV if I don't have enough board space in my car. So far so good. All you need are soft pads for the cross bars and tie downs.

I use a soft rack that straps to the roof of the car. Block Surf makes racks that lets you transport boards side by side or stacked on top of each other. I use the rack in the link below. I have hauled a 8'6" x 22" and 7'6" x 21" boards side by side on my little hatchback at 70 miles per hour. Place the front strap as far forward as you can, the back strap as far to the rear. Fins forward, position the boards towards the rear, rather than centered on the straps to keep the boards out of the wind. It takes me less than 5 minutes to put the straps and boards on the car.
