maurice cole metro 3

Postby nystea » Mon Jun 13, 2016 10:38 am

So i just get myself a 5.10 19 1/4 squad tail maurice cole metro 3 board it has a hardedge rail allover the board.. i get 4 sessions on it and this board flys like nothing else in this world..amazing!! flying to the barrels, cutbacks like i never did theme before.. however my bottom turn i feel like a newbee.. its almost impossible to go more or less vertically to the lip.. it make me think i use to rely to much on my fins and now need to use my rail?!! Is this board really improving my surfing..to learn to use my rail?!

At speed all turns are rail turns. I am guessing this is just frontside that you have problems getting vertical? Maybe the hard rails require more force to turn sharply. When I restarted surfing after not surfing for a while I found that right away I could do a backside bottom turn and go straight back up into the lip (but I couldn't do any other functional backside turn initially). It took me a while to accomplish the same frontside. It sounds like your other boards lost speed when you turned? If your tail slides in a turn then you are losing speed which is fine if the wave calls for it.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Yes its exactly only frontside.. when im surfing my pyzel board (wich is a more slowly speed controlling board) i can store so much power on my fins to go and hit the lip vertically on the metroboard it seems i cant load my fins the same way and it almost feeling like surfing with to much flexible fins (wich is not)... backside its exactly working fine to hit the lip vertical... very weird ..

I have thought about this and beginning to think it may have to do with the fact that when you bottom turn backside you automatically torque your upper body to look down the wave and this is the position you need to go up the wave also. When you are frontside you don't need to torque your upper body to look down the wave but you do to go vertical.

Make sence to me.. so what is the solution, restyle my frontside bottomturn? Or is there anychanse that board is just not made for lip attacks? :ninja:

I am pretty sure you can learn to hit the lip with it. You might just do a 2 stage bottom turn one is to turn down the line then make another turn up the face. I learned to hit the lip with my 8 foot fungun so I am pretty sure you can learn to do it with that board.

As it happens I spoke to Maurice today on one of his rare ventures away from his home.
There is nothing in the board that will prevent you going vertical, no issues about fin loading it is a very simple board, push your drive hard and fast up using you own provided body torque.
Come out of your frontside bottom turn and continue in the arc to the vertical point you want on the wave. Google Maurice Cole's site have a look at the videos on how they are being ridden, If Tom Curren can go vertical on them perhaps you can too

Can you explain what exactly is happening ? Are you straightening out, falling back, catching an edge and face planting the wave ?
Could it be attributed to the hard edges by the nose, that's biting and you're catching a rail, thus losing speed ?

Maybe it isn't the rails but the board width...that metro board has more fishy attributes than the pyzel right? Maybe you need to draw out the bottom turn a little bit.

Yeah that is exactly the case.. after surfing the board for nearly 3 weeks it seems like the more drawn out bottom turn works great.. its just a feeling i needed to get used to..
I picked up a costum shaped board wish changed the dimensions of the board more into a hpsb then a fish!
Great board! :woot:
