Second Hand Surfboard

Postby xaxafon » Sun May 29, 2016 11:37 pm

Hello guys!
I am new to this forum but I would greatly appreciate your opinion on this topic.
I am about to buy a second hand board. In this case it is a Channel Islands motorboat. Everything seems fine, it has minor dents and the owner told me they were all well fixed. The only thing that doest make me feel 100% comfortable is the color of the board. In some parts (specially on the back) there are brown spots. I am worried about them and would like to know what you guys think about the board.

Should I buy it?

It looks fine as far as I can see, apart from being very dirty. Give it a wipe with some methylated spirits to clean it up.

Three tests to do, give it a clean where you think the worst spots are, if they are yellow and below the glass = water damage.
Is it heavier than the normal motorboat? If so water damage!
Is this your first board? If so not suitable for a beginner!
What is your weight and height and skill level?
Clean off the wax and the dirt, is it a good price. HMMMMM on it for a while? :D

Thanks,
I'll do those tests, however, if it turns out to be water damage would you buy it?
No it is not my first board I have been surfing a shortboard for a while now. However this is my first second hand board.
I weigh around 65-70 kg, am 1m 75cm tall and my level is good.

Short answer NO, heavier than its design use, short boards especially light weight performance ones suffer from the extra weight of water damage.
The foam is possibly rotten and the board will miss the rebound and flex added by good foam , that flex will be transferred to the glass job and will fail there sometime into the future. Look also for excessive heel and foot dents, also a sign of failing foam, riding of the stringer also shows sunken water damage foam. If any of extra above scare there, the long answer is no :!:
