Snapped board

Postby seeker » Mon Feb 22, 2016 4:07 am

Hey everyone :)

My situation: I snapped my epoxy 10ft mal about a month ago right in the middle. Was considering to just put in the bin, but then in one of the local shops they offered me to fix it for $170. So I decided to go for it. Per discussion with the guy who was actually fixing the board, he did not guaranteed any warranty, but said it should generally be ok and some of the snapped boards that he fixed are still good after 3 years or so.

So it took him 3 weeks to finish it and yesterday I picked it up from the shop. Was happy, went into the 2ft swell, managed to catch a few waves and then after 30 minutes in the water... it snapped again exactly in the same place where it was originally (btw it rides pretty xxxxx, so never get snapped board fixed anyway, just forget them). I was riding a small wave less than a chest high or so. Nothing really powerful or big... and then it snapped again!

I brought it back to the shop straight away, but there was just a girl who had no idea. So we left it in the shop and I am now waiting for a call back from a guy who actually fixed it.

Now my question is: whether am I reasonable to go back to the shaper and say 'this isn't right', or whether I've just got to wear it as bad luck? I understand that there was no real warranty, but it definitely shouldn't snap in a 2ft swell in the next 40 minutes after repair... My suggestion is that the guy did not really know how to fix epoxy and that is probably the reason

what are your thoughts? Thank you.

Bin and forget , no warranty, means we don't know how it will hold up!
Don't waste money twice IMO!

Snapped in two pieces or just buckled ( like a big crease ) both times ? Usually if the repair was good, it'll break right in front or right behind the repair. Not straight down the same fault line.

I don't know if it is a common practice to repair snapped boards. That would be interesting to know. Judging by the stories you hear of broken boards in trash cans on big days, I have the feeling that the surfing consensus is not to bother with snapped boards. As far as going back to the shop is concerned, I would chalk it up to a failed experiment and walk away. If the general consensus is that it's not worth the time or money to repair a snapped board, then you can use that info as a litmus test to find out if a shop is competent or lacks integrity. Ask them if they repair snapped boards and judge them based on how they answer that question.

I know a surfer who has a 9" Southpoint board for over 5 years now. The board has snapped in half more than 6 times already. He repairs his own board but he goes out in overhead to double overhead swells. It only breaks when the swell is overhead and not smaller. So imo, good repairs does last long but probably not on overhead waves.

If it was me, I would never repair a snapped board. Why bother, there are plenty of 2nd hand surfboards on the market and I love buying new boards.

The guy said he made no warranties on the repair right? Why would you take the board back to discuss when this conversation should have happened prior to repair and surly prior for payment of services. I understand your frustration but you should take this as lesson learned - kinda expensive one as well. I think the "reasonable" answer to your question is to talk to the repair guy, maybe he offers future discounts on work or new board but if he the repair guys offers nothing then that's on you - move on and take it as a learning experience.
