Rash guard or wetsuit?

Postby kyleisanoob12 » Sun Feb 07, 2016 8:27 pm

This summer at the end of June, I'm planning on taking a trip to San Diego. What are the water temps around the end of June? I read that it's about 70 degrees. Would a rash guard and board shorts be fine or would it get too cold? Should I rent out a wetsuit instead? Thanks!

I was there and wore a 3/2 during August. It was cold.... it's all relative. I surf in very warm waters and SoCal water is too cold for me. About half the surfers didn't wear a wetsuit.

I've never surfer San Diego, but at 70F/21ºC, I'll be in boardies and a rashie if it's warm air or a thermal rashie if it's a bit cool.
Might use a 2mm spring suit if it was a chilly or breezy day, but certainly wouldn't be using a steamer.

And hell, if I'm on holiday - boardies!
You'll probably find me surfing, but if not, I'll probably be in the photography studio

It depends! Different from year to year! With El Niño, I surfed in boardies till the end of October! The year before that, no El Niño and wetsuit all summer!
Gloomy June means no sun! So at least a west is advisable

I get cold easily so I prefer a spring suit when it's warmer. It also means I don't have to worry as much about the sun. Like me, my father and my sister spend a lot of time in the sun and they have both had run-ins with skin cancer so I do my best to stay covered.
