Board Travel Bag

Postby TobyAnderson » Sun Nov 22, 2015 11:43 am

Hey,
I am looking at getting a double board travel bag for my Rusty Neil Diamond 5'8 at stock dimms and a custom board at 6'3 with about 18" of width (Both boards with removable fins). I don't want to be spending more than £150 though. Could anyone please give me some good bag names or give me any tips on what to look for? Also, do I want 6'3 bag or should I have a couple of extra inches on the length and width? I want to make sure I purchase the right product.
Thanks

Don't get exactly a 6ft3 bag, because you may find your board is actually 6ft3 1/2.

If you are travelling you may (should) wish to put some additional protection around the rails eg cut down pool snakes or something. Even if there is extra space, you can stuff it will clothes or towels or other travelling items, so its not wasted.

First have a think about how you are protecting your boards eg bubble wrap or pool snakes or towels etc. Then think about how big the boards will be with that protection. Then get a bag that is big enough. This will probably add a few inches to the width and maybe 2-3 inches to the length.

Any of the big manufacturers will make quality bags and you may be able to find some small local makers if you hunt around. Look for 10mm padding.

If you are after a bag only to put the boards in your car and only need a small level of protection, then you can get a cheaper bag eg 5mm padding, maybe 6ft5 long

Thanks so much! I will probably look for a 6'6 or 6'7/8 bag so there is room for clothes with a nice amount of width. I am planning to travel so 10mm will be good. What is a pool snake by the way?

maybe 'pool snakes' is just an Australian expression? Anyway, pic below. You can see that they are hollow, if you want you can cut them in half and slide them onto the rails of your board and tape them on. This may take up too much space, its just an option, but they are effective and pretty cheap (in Australia they are maybe $A6 per snake at our Walmart equivalents). If you google 'protecting surfboard when travelling' or similar, then you will find a lot of useful advice with alternate suggestions. On the whole, a bag is not enough, especially in relation to protecting the rails (eg: baggage handler picks up the bag with the handle on the side then drops the whole bag onto the ground so your rails hit the ground first - the sides of the board bags aren't usually that well protected, since its where the zip goes)

Us "Yanks" call them Pool Noodles. Or you can go to the hardware store and find water pipe insulation that already has the slit down the center.

Ahhh, in the UK they have a different name than pool noodles. I would use those but pipe insulation, as said, is already cut and would make more sense. I will therefore look for quite a wide bag as KLM are now offering an option to take a board rather than luggage for the same price. I'll look for some good bags, does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks again

Would it be alright to get a 7'0 fun board bag which would fit both board, but would be quite a lot bigger than my biggest bag which is 6'3. I would probably use my bag and not a suitcase so I would use the extra room, but I was wondering if it would affect the stability of my boards. The boards would be strapped down and would not have much room when padded around the rails, but there would be a lot of extra length. I would get the 6'6 but it is out of stock for a while and I need it soon.
Thanks

9" longer than your board. 9 inches.

Don't overthink it; with the pool noodles and a couple of towels wrapped around the ends the bag is full and boards protected. It doesn't have to fit like a glove.
