Need advice on board repair!

Postby jal21jal » Thu Oct 08, 2015 2:44 am

Hey guys, I'm new to the surfing world I don't know much! I just got my first surf board for free yesterday! And honestly it's in rough shape and a really old board.. All I really know is it's expensive to repair the fin box. So I know nothing about it and I'm hoping you guys can help! I was looking to know:
1: how much would it cost about, to repair the dings and replace the fin box?
2: is the board a good board?
3: is it worth repairing?
4: what's the value of the board? ( if repaired and/or not repaired )
5: (part of #1) where should I get it fixed?
I hope you guys can help and I look forward to your responses

Not a bad start up board, most of the dings would only go as far fixing them with a dash of solar resin as per the instructions on the pack.
Easy as really.
There is no fin box, it is a fixed fin that needs fixing let a shop do that! That is the most expensive job.
The board is worth repairing as your first board. There is some water damage (the brown and discoloured areas and there may be more shatters and hairline damage to the rails which you will find around the brown areas.
How much is the board worth = ???? A local board shop will do the repair , the where depends on where you are, some where nearby, most likely but you haven't said where you are!
Worth repairing = yes!
Asa beater learner it will be just right , catch anything , good to lern basic skills and even learn basic repairs all good.

You fix it yourself and you learn new things. You also will enjoy using the board knowing you fixed it. At beginner stage, board quality is not critical. Starting with a long board, which you have, is critical. Enjoy.

Thanks! Your response helps a lot! I live in Yorba Linda, but for a better price I am willing to drive a bit! And you mentions water damage is that bad? Is it fixable? And if there is "hairline" damage what does that mean, how is it fixed? ( I just ordered a complete solarez ding repair kit ) also you mentioned I have no Fin box! Is the fin still fixable?

Water damage means water has soaked into the foam, the board will heavier than without the damage, but not noticeable for a learner. where the resin and glass coating on the board is intact it just looks like a clear surface. where there is cracks or damage they are visible of maybe only seen by the brown discolouration. Most cracks are on the most heavily impacted areas the rails, simple thumb rule "if you can flick it or click it " with a fingernail then a fix is needed! Often a simple smear of solar res across the crack is enough (just sand the area before smearing and sand after to give a smooth finish so you don't abrade your legs)

The fin needs to be reset in its correct position with no deviation from the centre line and no lean. Usually fix fins are taped into place and correct alignment with masking tape strapping to the rails leaving the base free to place a mixture of fibreglass rovings ( threads) and liquid polyester resin with the right amount of hardener mixed (Different from the sun cure stuff)
Too much hardener causes brittleness or worse still the risk of chemical fire. Hence the recommendation to get a shop job done on it. It is still doable for a first timer just look up fin repairs. You could also get a shop to cut off the fin and install a box more costly but gives you choice of fins This might not be a possibility if the foam around the fin area is water damaged.
all.
Any other water damage you just live with.

If someone gave me that board here's what I would do.
Take the fin off, (sneezing hard will probably do that).
Sand the whole of the underside of the board really hard with 80 grit sandpaper taking off as much off the sanding coat as possible, back until the weave of the fibreglass is starting to peek through.
Then I'd install a fin box making sure I had enough resin/micro balloon mix left over to fill up all the dings on the board. Re sand again.
Then I'd reapply the hot/sanding coat to the whole of the bottom of the board. Sand it flat.

The board looks quite nice so I think its worth doing a proper job on it. Youtube will have videos on it on how to install finboxes and apply hot coats to surfboards and I can offer more specific advice if you decide to go down this route.

....and if they gave it to me I'd take it to a shop because I have NO idea at all about how to do that properly

....little dings I can handle....new fin box in potentially crumbly/unstable foam with new glassing....leave it to the pros....

Nice looking stick....nevermind the little cancers on it....it looks like a fun board.

Again, thanks so much you have been extremely helpful :D I have ordered a ding repair kit and I'll fix those songs this weekend! But again, for my fin where should I take and what's an estimated price?

It only cost 15$ (USD) to repair the fin? At your shop? Where is your shop, and what is covered in the repair? I would love to take it down as soon as possible :D

Bali Indonesia.

Go to your local surf shop. They should either be able to do the work or point you in the right direction.
