What fins for my new quiver!?

Postby Josh.Mustillo » Sun Aug 23, 2015 3:23 am

Hello all,

I just purchased a new quiver yesterday! It's a 6 foot hybrid fish (Aloha The Hamster) is the model.

I put my FCS AM2 Mediums Thruster I think from my old board.

But this board having the new FCS 2 system I think it will be a shame for me to not grab some FCS 2 fins.

The shapers recommended: FCS II Performer PC Carbon Tri Set XL or add FCS II Performer PC Quad Rear Set L as a Quad

I'm probably going to ride it as a thruster for a few months then maybe try out a quad setup.

So yeah what do you guys recommend for my fin setup?

Check out the board here: http://surfboardagency.com/aloha-hamster/

Thanks! Josh

I stopped using size L in all my boards, even my big wave gun. Although they do have a lot of hold I like them easier to paddle, the XL and L fins are usually too slow for my taste.

As to a quad, do M front and center trailers on back, unless you want a lot of hold then go with single foil sides on back

How heavy are either of you? If you are 130lbs, 200 or 280lbs, it makes a difference as well as the kind of board that you plan to ride and the conditions going out in.....can't really recommend much without more detail.

I'm 84kg, like mediums for the reason given by IB (paddle speed)...I use large in wider tailed boards on breaks where you don't have to chase down waves, or on heavier days....channel bottom board I have I use mediums and that combined with the channels gives enough hold for what I normally do....want to experiment and put some med-small Yu's in that I bought for my girls and see how that goes....

I recommend getting as many fins as your budget and passion for surfing allows for....the only way that I've really found out what works for me is dropping in a set and surfing them....not surprisingly the fins that generally work the best for me as I improve have been fins designed for general all around application, so skill level would play a part too in a recommendation as well as what it is you want to do on the wave....
