Resin not curing

Postby BlueShark » Fri Aug 14, 2015 1:22 pm

I am in the midst of repairing my 10 ft single fin.

The kit that I'm using is this: http://www.amazon.com/Ding-All-Epoxy-Su ... G4M051R54J

I am in the process of using the fiberglass cloth and resin. 10 days ago I laid the cloth down and applied the resin. It still hasn't dried/cured yet! It's been rather humid here (eastern NC), lots of rain. But this is ridiculous.

What did I do wrong? What should I do now? I just want this resin to cure on the cloth so I can sand it down and be done with this.

For another repair on the board I did the filler mixture (the q-cell with the resin and other additive). That cured nicely. But this resin on the cloth is just not curing. No additives to the resin, just the resin itself and the cloth (as per the instructions).

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

I think you didn't mix the right ratio of the two parts of epoxy resin. How did you measure the amounts? The solution is to remove it all and start all over again
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

No additives to the resin , there is the source of your problem, resin needs hardener same as the Q cell,
It won't dry start again. Big oops there !

Bingo.
You'll probably find me surfing, but if not, I'll probably be in the photography studio

Epoxy resin is not the same as PE resin. PE you need to add Catalyst ( there are UV curing types though). Depending on many factors ( humidity, volume, tint colors, hot batch ) the amount you add varies. But for Epoxy, you need to add the exact amount of Part A and Part B. If not, it will never go off.

Most epoxy resin systems have 2 different resins that are mixed together. The main resin and a hardener resin. If you don't mix in the hardener resin it won't harden unless it is sun cure or you want to leave it for 100 years or so. So if that is what you did you have to remove the glass and wipe/scrape/sand off the resin and redo the fix. If you did add the two resins together but maybe got the mixture wrong then you might add some heat to see if you can get it to harden but if it were me I would remove it all and start all over again.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

The only thing that may save you is to expose the uncured resin to UV light. Get into a lab or suntan booth or place it in direct and strong sun light.
