Boardbag size - need advice

Hi guys

I have a 6'8" board (removable fins) and two bags here to choose from - a 6'7" and a 7', these ones: http://surffcs.com/shop/surf-surfboard- ... h-funboard I've packed the board and it would fit in either, though of course the small bag is quite tight. Both have space for extra padding - I threw in a couple of towels, even a (foldable) yoga mat and clothes for good measure and it seems to be fine even in the small bag. However, I'm torn on whether the ultratight smaller bag is indeed the better choice or not. It's really compact, which I would guess is a good thing as the board won't move around in the bag - but my 'logic' might not be one I was also thinking about buying a board sock for extra protection, but I'm not sure if this is really necessary and I get the feeling the small bag would then be too tight.

Reading up most seem to recommend a bag that is a couple of inches longer than the board, but the guy at the store I bought the board at thought the small one would suffice and has apparently carried his own boards around the world that way before. What do you think, what's the better choice? I really can't quite seem to decide.

This is my first time taking my board somewhere and I of course want to do everything right Ah yes, this is for air travel. Cost-wise, it makes a difference as it's exactly those 3 extra inches that force me to register it as a longboard (at twice the cost) on some airlines (not all). Needless to say I'd rather pay more for transport than have a damaged board, but still...

Any advice?

In traveling, I have found that not matter how well padded, it can still get damaged...somes you win, somes you lose.

As for bag size, the only thing I would stress, is being tight against the ZIP, can do some damage to the board if dropped on that end or side.

Other than that, I have always gone for slightly longer than shorter.

I have a shortboard which has been on 2 long haul flights (11+ hours each), it was seperately packed both times.

From my experience get an extra foot in length so you have plenty of padding room, it sounds like alot, but if your board means as much to you as mine does its worth it - Then go and grab your some of these:



cut them in half and wrap them around your rails, get 'big bubble' bubble wrap for the decks and they should make it anywhere in one piece.
