Small ding on epoxy board

Postby Nikel » Thu Jan 16, 2014 12:49 am

Hello all,

I've just bought my first board. It was a nice deal, but it has a small ding on the bottom.
It has the spider web pattern and I can feel the crack here and there if I fingernail it.
I believe a sticker or some foil tape could be enough to prevent leakage for a while. Cos I'm dying to take it to the water.: )

Even so, I would be thankful to hear your opinion, because being on the bottom I'm wondering:

Do you think the tape/sticker would hold?
Will it affect the water flow to much?

It's my intention to repair it properly but the dent is so small that I'm not shure if something like solarez would result, at least not without making it bigger than it is so it could hold properly...

Then again, I know nothing or so little of the subject that I'm only guessing!

I'll attach a few pics of it.

Thanks for your feedback.
Cheers
Rui

IMO foil tape is a cheap and nasty way to temporarily fix a ding, you really don't know if it is leaking.
Spider shatters like that can weather a few surfs before fixing , but it is always better to fix anything ASAP.
Forget stickers, they do not keep water out!
You probably won't notice much difference in the board with either tape or stickers but the water flow below will quickly pull them off if any edges are raised.
A proper repair will go wider than the shattered area and will bond into the glass further out. Solar Rez is a good temporary option .
There is also a clear ding tape but same issues apply.

Basic rule of thumb; is if you can flick or click it with a finger nail it will let in water eventually.
One more thing make sure if you do use Solar Rez it is compatible with the epoxy and the foam underneath.
How are you identifying the board as epoxy?
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

hi jaffa,

Tks a lot for your prompt answer and wise advice.

As I thought... I should get it repaired!
It´s just that I´m dying to try it out!!!
I will take it to the shop for repair.
Even though I think I could do it myself, it would be a premiere and I don´t want to risk messing up the bottom of the board!

The board was sold to me has being Epoxy made.
I am not a specialist but it feels and sounds like it...?!
But again, I could be wrong.
Here´s their website for your knowledge:

Given the opportunity, do you have any opinion on them?!

Thanks again,
rui

I surf for 10+ years now and have trialled an error I dings. Believe me when I say JUST GET IT REPAIRED. It will only cause you heart ache further down the line when you are trying to dry the inside of the board out. Fixing is cheap and easy so just get it done :-)
