Anyone reglass a surfboard nose with carbon fiber?

Postby RichD14 » Sun Jul 21, 2013 7:19 pm

Carbon cloth is like $5 a yard. I smashed the nose of my board, if it has to be reglassed anyway couldn't you just use the carbon under the surface?. Anyone try this?

Besides it just looks cool as F*#K...

Or does anyone know if it's possible once the board is shaped? It would be a prefect way to fix a broken / broken off board nose....

It depends if you have an epoxy board or not. Carbon has to be layed up with epoxy resin not polyester resin. Also it is incredibly stiff and is usually vacuum bagged onto to boards although for such a small area it may be possible to hand lam. It wouldn't be a cheap modification i suspect.

Are your sure about the epoxy resin? I just got my cousin dive and it's glassed with regular resin and I've got carbon fiber patches for tail and front stringer area.

Yes i am sure. Polyester resin bonds very poorly to carbon fibres. It is unwise to use it with carbon as you risk delamination. Are you sure you patchs are carbon and not fake carbon?

"It is useless to use carbon mixed with polyester; the very low “elongation at break” of the resin will not allow the carbon mechanical properties to be solicited before the resin breaks, creating a weak point in which humidity will penetrate quickly and delamination will occur. Polyester is easy to work on, with all techniques from traditional wet-laid process to vacuum infusion or RTM (closed moulding technique), it will not heat up too fast and the acceptable range of temperature while using Polyester is wider."
Your board may be glassed with vinlyester but this is unlikely too as it is not widely used in the surfboard industry.

Both of the boards in the picture are actually both poly.. not epoxy. however I do see carbon on the epoxy boards a lot like the futureflex boards. Surf Source sells the stuff

You can use epoxy resin on PU/polyester boards anyway, so if you're doing a repair then it could (should?) be alright. Not that I'm massively knowledgeable about carbon layup, so make sure you do your own research too.
