The paddling is much the same, but you will notice a difference on small waves - anything under about 2ft requires quite a different approach than you use for a longboard (because a LB just catches anything, the shorter boards you have to take a bit of a later drop); plus in weak waves the shorter board is left behind a bit.
Anyway, if you are confident on your LB then go for the shorter board; but it will be a bit less stable and a bit harder to catch waves than the 7ft6, but should be easier to turn. If you are still a bit unsure on the LB (eg miss some pop ups, fall off etc) then go the longer board.
The other question is - if your aim is to end up on a short board - whether you should transition away from the mal shape to a hybrid shape (eg firewire addvance) or 'fish' shape (eg the 7ft4 nsp fish). The funboard will probably be an easier board to surf but the other boards are more '1/2 way' to shortboard.
I dont think you will make a big mistake if you go for something in the 7ft2 - 7ft6 range that is wide and thick.
