Best wetsuit for a lanky guy

Postby Gerbosaurusrex » Mon Oct 01, 2012 6:23 pm

Right i've been looking through all the wetsuits on the web and i'm having trouble
because i'm 6ft and weigh about 120lbs and my chest is about 32" as well as my waist being about 30" because I have like no body mass nothing fits
any wetsuit that I borrow off anyone just is for short people fo it fits all right but my genitals get squished mostly and its short on the leg
the one I use now is for like 6ft person but has this like bubble of air in the chest and it's really not good because it defeats the point of a wetsuit being like a second skin and keep you warm. I surrvive but it's getting annoying now its getting cooler again.

anyway just wondering if anyone had this trouble or knew what to do ?

If you can't find one that fits properly (have you checked all the sizing charts on the websites for different brands?) then you can get a custom made suit, which aren't that much more expensive. It's an unfortunate annoyance to have to buy custom but I'd say it's worth it to stay warm. Being cold takes the fun out of surfing.

Hi Gerbosaurusrex, welcome to Surfing Waves!

Unfortunatley, some body shapes don't fit into the average. You probably won't find one to fit you off the rack. Lebowski's right, a custom fitted suit is the way to go. They don't cost that much more that one off the rack, but the fit will be way better, it will be warmer and it will be comfortable.
If a wetsuit does not fit properly, it won't do the job it's designed for (as you've found out)

Most manufacturers make 'MT' (medium tall), although you have probably looked at the websites showing the measurments for these.

Some of the higher end wet suits nowdays are very flexible, and the website measurments are the maximum sizes the suits can stretch to; but they will also fit people 2-4 inches narrower/shorter/thinner than the website measurements. So it might be worthwhile trying on a few suits, if you can - its not necessarily a total loss even if the suit doesnt appear to fit based on the website figures. That said, as others have mentioned, once you are into these upper end suits, the price difference between them and a custom is not that much. By upper end I mean suits like the e-bomb, x-zip2 etc etc.

Keep in mind that each maker has slightly different cut and fit. Your best bet is to hit a large store, line up 5 or so suits and try them all on. Its an exhausting process (I had to try on 7 to find one that fit me).

Finally, the front zip suits have many advantages; one being that they dont flush as easily as back zips, and so can work a bit better even if they dont fit as well as you like.

Hi!
I'm buying my first wetsuit and i have problems deciding which size to buy. I am 182 cm (5ft 11 21⁄32in) and 73kg and i've decided on buying O'nell Superfreak wetsuit. Which size should i buy??(

M : HEIGTH(175-180cm = 5'9-5'11)
MT: HEIGTH(185-191cm = 6'1-6'3)

Is it better to buy something a bit shorter or something a bit larger??
Please help!! :)

Hi JanS91, welcome to Surfing Waves!

You really need to go and try one on if possible. A good fit for comfort and function is all important, especially if you are in-between sizes like you are. Do you have access to these suits at a surf shop nearby?

Sounds like you'll be a 'small tall'. Billabong are best for tall/thin people.
