Fin Advice for Magic Carpet!!

Postby alexdulac » Mon Jan 24, 2011 12:25 pm

Recently bought a 6'8 tiki flying carpet, really pleased with it, but its my first board thats shorter than 9 foot and im wondering what the best fin placement is for me.

ive got a nice selection some standard style fins and a True Ames Greenough Stage-6 Fin 8 inch, which is amazing on one of my long boards.

the carpet is setup for thrusters and a longboard fin, but i'm not sure to go for a singlefin setup, maybe with my stage 6 fin, or try thrusters, or just leave whats on it at the moment.

im mainly surfing 2-5ft waves, nothing scary! im 6 foot and weigh about 175 pounds.

any advise would be great! thanks,

thanks mate. only asked for some advise but it was nice seeing your input.

any serious advise would be really appreciated, especially after the previous comment. i've tried looking around for some fin theory stuff, but everything relates to standard thruster setup or singlefin for the longboards, theres absolutley nothing about magic carpet setups. im dying to get this board riding great so i can get a nice ride on something smaller and more manageable than my longboards.

Ignore him, he's just silly

Anyway... fins...
Well, the obvious answer is to try out what you've got and see what you prefer. In fact, that's really going to be the only answer because ultimately it'll come down to preference and style, not to mention skill and waves.

But to try and give a general answer - if you use a single longboard type fin in a magic carper, it'll turn similar to a longboard ie long drawn out curves rather than snaps. If you stick with a thruster setup, it'll (theoretically) be more responsive.

If you're used to a longboard, try the single fin configuration first to make the transition easier.
Then try out what you've got in all combinations - even the 'wrong' ones as it'll teach you what fins do.

I ride my 7ft carpet on a single fin set-up. In fact i didn't even bother to glass in the plugs for the thrusters.
