How to secure boards to FCS softracks

Hi,
I've just bought an FCS Premium double softrack for use on hire cars when on holiday.

I've done a couple of trial runs and was just wondering which is the best way to secure the board, tail or nose forwards (I assume that the boards should be stored deck down)?

Also is it suitable to use a padded board bag with the system?

During the trail runs I used the board bag and there was alot of lift at the front end, is this system designed like this to absorb wind pressure or am I using it incorrectly?

Yes, you can use them with board bags.

The best way is to have the board with the fins facing up at the front of the car. That way the curve of the board hugs the curve of the car, and the fins prevent the boards from sliding backwards. Have as little of the board(s) hanging off the front as possible (easy with a shortboard, trickier with a longboard).

Put a twist in the straps, as this helps with the inevitable 'buzzing' that the straps make at high speed.

If the boards are in a bag, tie a strap thourgh the handle so that the boards will stay with the car in the event of coming loose (it does happen).

Oh, and you shouldnt be able to lift the front end.

Thanks for the info. I usually travel with a 7'10" minimal so I'll have to put up with some of the board hanging off the front of the roof.
I tried it the way you suggested and tightened all straps as tight as i could and the wind was still getting under the front end and lifting it. i think i might need to position the front straps further forward. will try this and keep you posted.

Yup, the front straps should be as far forward as possible - pretty much next to the windscreen.

Have just got back from a weeks surf trip along the Atlantic Coastline north of Lisbon and the softracks worked great. Used them as recommended and didn't have any problems along winding coastal roads or on highways at 80mph. Thanks for your help.
