THIS AIN"T A FISH! REALLY....

Jeez, some people are so sensitive

But at 7'.... THAT AIN'T A FISH EITHER!!!

The whole point of a fish (and, granted, Im being pedantic, and I realise that boards can span several categories) is that they are SHORT.
Over about 6'2, and they stop being a fish ie they stop riding like one, no matter what their shape.

relation really has nothing to do with it. Once over the magik height it just becaomes a board with a swallow tail.
That's just me though.

Yeah this board has a slightly pulled in tail at 11 1/2 inches (at start of buttcrack) but still classified as a fish by san diego standards. -> any less than 11 inches isnt a true fish its a swallow)
I love this board in waves like above and it handles up to around 5 feet in hollow conditions or up to 8-10 feet if its glassy, easy enough entry and walled out perfection.

True fish need room to turn and are forward surfing boards not for vertical smashing the lip but highlining down long walls on pointbreaks, making it around long closeout sections with speed.

Some can handle pits and some are better in fatter waves, i have three different fish that all ride differently and handle different waves the best.

The one pictured above i took last year to sumatra by itself for 3 months and g-land with another few boards and it went unreal.
But i do agree fish need the right waves, its just the one above isnt a crap wave fish its a good wave fish.
In general whatever you get they can be selective in what waves they like and need good long period swells and room to be surfed well.

They can be a xxxxx to surf backhand aswell and agree with that gun theory some one was saying.
It should be your second or third board in your quiver.

I as the same question, is it worth geting a retro fish? av been looking at 6' 2" 2 1/4 thk quad and 6' 5" 2 3/4 thk twin keel fish. av got a 6 4 Al merick flyer and a 7 9 BIC.

Was thinking that the Fish would replace my old tug boat bic for them small junky days in north walse.

Was thinking of the 6 5 for more floation any one got any advise how much more floate would the 6 2 give me more than my flyer????

any advise would be appreciated

Its not just float or volume (although this does play a part) that makes a retro fish fast and good in junky surf its the flatness in the rocker and the lack of drag from the fins.
I would say don't go for the 6ft 5 but i would also say don't go for the quad. Go for a twin no bigger than 6ft 2 x 20.5 x 2 5/8

yea, deffo notice the speed when riding the fish compared to a shortboard. i thought it would be awkward going for a 6'0 fish but as theres so much float in the board its easy to surf and catch waves, i think easyer than a normal shortboard to stand and ride the wave on but as KS says, wouldn't go too long.

Unless your surfing skills are pretty good i would not go for a board at 2 1/4" depth. That is quite a thin board. Also the quad with four channels sounds quite high performance/unusual too. I would like to see a photo of the under side of that board as it sounds more like a bonzer than a fish although im sure it is not.

its ok 2 and a 1/4 for a shortboard but for a fish will make it more difficult with catching waves as you won't have as much float
