Shaping my first board

Postby CHarvey » Fri Jan 04, 2008 12:53 am

I need some where to shape. I spoke to the local surf shop that has a shaping room and he wants to charge me double the normal amount for a blank and $10 an hour for using the room. Can't use the room if I don't buy a blank from him. Does anyone have a shaping room I can use or cheaply rent near or in Mission Beach? I hope so, otherwise I will have to almost double the expenditure for making my own board.

Hope someone can help.

tent sounds good, not sure about renting from a surf shop as they will always want to make as much as possible from you

Only thing is that I live on the beach and have absolutly no free space in or around my apartment. The buildings are really jammed together so there isn't any space to put up a tent unfortunetly. Thank you for the idea though.

There are a couple of blank distributors here in OC that have shaping rooms at their factories that they let people use, don't know if the same exists in San Diego. Just try looking up the brand of blank you want to use and see if you can find a distributor near you.

Here is the finished product after getting my board glassed. The guy doing the glass job jerked me around for an extra week and a half but I finally got it back. He forgot to put my company name on the bottom too but at that point I just wanted my board back.

Here is my logo that I drew up.

Very much looking forward to getting some feed back.

Forgot to say how it rides....DUH!
I have ridden it for the past two days and here are my findings so far:
It is very easy to pearl due to the nose being more short board style. Paddles very easily and after figuring the board out it is easy to get into the waves. You have to paddle for the waves at an angle or you will pearl while dropping in. The board is very fast and turns like crazy. It takes chop pretty good and so far I have had it in chest high waves. I love it.

Good logo and the concaves came out really well. I'd be very interested to know how much you got charged for glassing and did that include fitting the fins and sanding?

I paid $205 for the glass job. This includes 2 logos (even though I only got 1), installing the fins, installing the leash plug, sanding, one 6oz S glass bottom, 4oz and 6oz on the deck both S glass.

pkbum: All I did was research board design and shaping methods for 4 months prior to actually making the board. Designed a template with some numbers I pulled out of my butt, and 5 hours later I had my board ready for glassing. Hoping to be able to shape another one soon. Want to get good enough so I can shape a hollow core balsa board.

I have used it the past two days. Really dig how it handles, really fast too.
