Do you mean traction as in a deck pad?
Traction of some sort is. It's your own choice if it's a deck grip or wax.

I have a 10' with a pad on the back. i never have stood where I can use it, never. I personally think you should save your money, use wax, and use the extra cash to save for another trip to where it is warm.

if you got a softtop you dont need it, if you got fibreglass or wooden board you'll need it just at the areas where your feet gonna land when take off, you dont need to wax the places you are gonna run around.
