fish in LA?

Postby CastorTroy » Mon Jan 14, 2008 11:47 pm

Hey,

I've been riding an 8'4" longboard for a total of 6 months over the past two years, riding 1-2 hours every other day during that time. I'm 22, 5'11" and 160 lbs, am fit and strong. I've gained a decent ability and am feeling restrained by the board and want to move to a shorter one.

I ride basically in Venice and Manhattan. The waves are basically 2-5'. I'm not sure if a Fish is good for me in this area or not... but that's what I've been leaning towards.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much! :)

OK. Well I talked to a guy in a surf shop last night and he recommended going with a 6'0" hybrid fish.

At your height/weight/experience, I'd go with a little longer.

6'0 would be okay for a 'real' fish, but I'd say more like 6'4-6'6 for a hybrid. Ive got a 6'6 hybrid fish (well, I hope I still have. Damn you aussie customs) and it goes beautifully in small-medium conditions.

Like all fish, it struggles in the big stuff on steep drops due to the lack of rocker.

If you're determined to go the fish route, I'd say definitely try one out before you buy. They're not to everyone's taste, and if you're used to an 8'4 board you may well hate it.

I love 'em.
