Its a differcult one... Obiviously it make it weasyer to find were you last posted but often people have no idea on design and sizing.

Stupidly large dimentions or long or what ever. Perhaps SP will investigate Text only ones to begin with.

I see the point of avatars but I have never seen the point of signatures - can someone enlighten me.

if i knew what signatures u were talking about i might go for it is it the things that are like ur name at the bottom of the post? or what

I can't think of any reason not to allow signatures. I you don't want to view the signatues, you can just turn it of in your profile.

It is a good idea to limit the signatures to text only and around 50-100 letters.
