Maybe I'm strange, but wave shape, and form are my prioritys over wave size.
I'll take a 2 foot glassy ground swell any day over a head high wind blown mess.

If your just in the white water, not getting out back yet, then anything that doesnt beat you up too much(and gets you mooving) is good enough.
Once you can paddle, pop up, trim the board somewhat & get out back you want nice clean waves, 2-3ft or so till your used to catching green faced waves.
When your learning part of it is learning abotu waves, whats good, whats bad, when its worth going out & staying out, or staying in.

yup, same here..waves that peel slowly, coral/reef breaks have the best shapes in my opinion

Send some pictures of an average/poor day and a good day. It's hard to tell just from typing.
Good Luck

It's a huge wave that has sucked almost dry over a reef. So he is pretty much about to eat a lot of coral...and get held against it for a while! Not a nice thought!

Have you read his account of it? Goes something along the lines of "I could see it was a mutant but my tow partner seemed to think it was okay, so I went with it. Then suddenly there's this monster mutant all around me... (quite a lot more) ...I so so so
almost made it"

How can you almost make that?? It just looks like thousands of tons of death on his head..over thousands of square meters of deadly rocks and reef!!
I watched some laurie towner stuff..that's quite amazing!
Definately they have my admiration!

That step that that wave creates is mad. And is this not the wave that they took the inflatable croc onto in memory of Steve Irwin. Might be wrong there. But i have seen some mad paddle in surfing and tow in on that wave, its just that step that appears from nowhere.

I wonder what he was thinking when he looked up and saw that
Hit the lip, or go for a nice carving cutback?
