Do i have to use a roof rack when transporting my board, I got SEAT LEON and the roof racks are really expensive, i was wondering what i could do to avoid paying this money.. the board i got is 10ft.

i was wondering if i am able to keep the board in the bag and use ties instead, but putting padding on theedge of the board where the ties are to stop it from denting?

am i mental or is this possible.. i dont want to wreck the board, and i dont want it to fly off my car in transport?

Ive seen inflatable roof racks for about £50.00, dont know how good they are, maybe worth a look ????

By the way all I did was search the exact site that we are already on for this information.

Last spring I drove my Kia Spectra to Florida, and I strapped a long board to the top of it without a rack.

This is what I did (it cost about $20 total)

Buy two good ratchet straps.

Buy one Foam Noodle (The long foam noodles for... Ok I really have no idea what they are for, I think they are for playing in the pool or something, they are long foam noodles that come in a bunch of different colors, they are usually sold in WalMart, in the toy section.

I cut the noodle in half, so I would have two noodles.

I laid the noodles on top of my car (across), one over the drivers/&front passagers doors, and one over the back doors.

I laid the surfboard on top of the noodles, and then I ran a ratchet strap over top of the surfboard, and through the windows, and strapped that sucker tight.

I drove a total of 4000 miles with it on top of my car like that, mostly speeding too. No problems.

But, I would just buy a rack, Toole has one for $100 that is awsome, and you can go buy a set up that is made for it, that is pretty much the same idea that I did with the noodles for about $40, but if you are that strapped for cash, buy some noodles and strap the board down with ratchet straps. The noodles let you tighten the board down really tight, and the board pushes the noodles down, so the noodles are pushing back up against the board, if you just strapped down the board without some type of foam or something, I don't know if it might break loose if you are driving fast.

Buy some soft racks off eBay for around AU$20-AU$30.

They work really well. My last set are on "permanent lend" to a mate and he's very happy with them.

Yeah - soft racks for a longboard are fine. You can either do it yourself like cj said, or buy a set of soft racks for anywhere from $20-$75. not much difference in them for the price.

Hi there!

A cheap way to do it is to get a bath towel and some proper straps with the 'teeth' grips (£ 10 or so).

Fold the towel length ways then width ways to get a well padded rectangle.

Place the board(s) on top of the towel (on the roof!) and strap them on tightly, opening the front doors and stapping through the inside of the car; with the 'teeth' grips you will get the boards really tight. Close the doors on the straps.

A few points to remember:

1. Remember it is illegal to have the board 'further forward' than the front tip of your car (its is ok to have it hanging over the back) so place it as middle as you can.

2. Water runs to the lowest point, so if it rains it will eventually drip inside the car (via the straps) so have another towel!!

3. Having the straps tight against the rubber seals of your car (at the roof at the top of the door) could eventually damage them and decrease the 'waterproofness' of your car' so make this a short term thing and save for some proper roof-rack type thing.

Yeah I got a set of soft racks from city beach which work pretty well.

Cheers guys, i just bought a set and just about to try them out.

You may end up with some wax on the top of your car too. Be sure to put it on with the top of the board down, fins forward. Be careful when you open your trunk. Put a twist in the strap on the sides so they don't hum.

Then you could just stick the board inside, no worrying about putting it on top
