Aipa Big Boy Sting

Postby Geezer » Sat Mar 30, 2024 10:24 am

So I'm thinking about getting an Aipa big boy sting. It seems like it will fit in the space I need for days that the waves are smaller and or softer, days that I'm feeling my age (53 now) or just want to suck up all the waves getting in early. A funboard on steroids is what it looks like and at my current 105kg seems like it was aimed at guys like me.

What I've read here and other places is that this is a special board. If anyone has any experiences on it please share; I'm still on the fence but want to be sold!

Also, what size should I get? Size range now is from 7' 59L to 7'4", 7'8", 8' and 8'4". My first thought was the 7' but maybe this board goes better in bigger sizes? If anyone has any insight on this it would be appreciated.

Good timing on your posting, I just purchased the Surftech Aipa 7’4” here in Hawaii. It will replace the Boardworks Aipa 7’4” that I have in Tokyo.
( the distributor was out of the 7'8" that I originally wanted )

BUT ........ I wouldn't recommend you get the Big Boy Sting. I would recommend you get the Surftech Aipa Big "Brother" Sting in Tuflite construction.

I would have got the 8'0" Big Brother Sting , but it doesn't fit standing up in my small apartment.

Why ? Because you said .........

The Big Boy Sting and the Big Brother Sting are very similar except for one thing. Can you guess what that is ?

Other than that reason, only the Big Brother Sting comes in Tuflite construction.

I would say the nose is pulled in on the sting and not the big brother. I am guessing the sting has a little more rocker and dimensions are a little different, sting is wider than the big brother and packs more volume in shorter sizes than the big brother does.

Wouldn’t you know a board came up on the local Facebook buy and sell that looked like something that might address some of what I was looking for. It was a mark richards flying fish in a 7’ size. It is a 2+1 setup …..I just couldn’t resist!

Stock photo (not actual) and size listed below. At 47L it’s beefy but I should still be able to sink a rail. I am still interested in the big boy sting but want to work this one out first. I’m thinking of the 7’4” when I do get around to the sting. Here’s the pics:
