Surfing Waves

Wel..i was thinking that...the longboarders have there forums...and the shortboarders have theres...but what about us mini mal surfers?

I think that there is already too many catagories within this forum to be practical... to add another under the heading minimal? You may as well add one for the fish, eggs, etc. etc.

but seriously, I agree, will get to be to much if we keep adding more categories. there must be some category already to fit any such post.

If you surf a mini-mal - it's about HOW you surf it, you can ride them like shortboards so you can post there or you can carve like longboards so you can post there.

I like to think of it more that we have the freedom to post in ALL of the forums on here as we cover the whole range!!

This makes us better than everyone else!

I reckon fish/eggs etc all come under 'Shortboards' really, Funboards & Minimals would be in the same section. But the good thing about Surfing Waves is that people don't mind if you ride a shortboard, but post in the longboarders forum and vice versa. We're all nicely chilled and laidback (except when Roy's about) which is the essence of surfing anyway!! I don't reckon we need a new forum - we're all surfers so why make divisions?

I think mini mals are mals otherwise they'd be called maxi shorts or something like that. It's hard to put them into a category I know because everybody has their idea of what a mini mal is. Ask some xxxxx shortboarder and they'll tell you that a 7'2 is a minimal. I tend to think that a minimal is anything over 8ft. I own an 8'1 Mctavish Carver. It kinda paddles like a 9fter but it much faster and looser on the wave. It has a bit cut away from the nose to avoid digging the nose in on beachies and it is just generally a bit easier to handle especially on a beach break. It is very wide and fat though at 22 7/8 wide x 3 inches thick. A good fun easy to paddle, easy to catch waves on high performance board. (small mal or minimal!!)

I prefer boards greater than 9 foot and within reasons consider boards between 7' to 8'6" a minimal (a form of the funboard)... really depends not only on size but shape as they are what the name implies "minimal".

If you really want to get into it, classification according to the ratio of board to rider makes more sense... a 9' board for a 6' person is general accepted as a longboard or mal. If the board is approximately 3' more than the height of the rider or the ratio of board to rider is greater then 3/2 I feel that it can be regarded as a true form of the longboard.
