Surfing Waves

Here is the question for the group:

Asking for a strong intermediate lightweight surfer....for mushy beachbreaks knee to chest surfing in quiet line ups...go with the 9' or longer? Any qualitative differences you expert quiver builders might wish to discuss?

To shorten the question.....as between 9' and 9' 4"......considerations? Feel free to indicate without reasons...

I am not the one to recommend boards as I am all for custom made boards but if you mention your weight and height and age perhaps the ones who have a clue might want to answer.

My advice, pick them up, put them each under your arm and let the boards tell you.

The narrative requires a denouement.

Here it is, the board in question (styled after the one described above) which passed the tuck under arm test with flying colours and voilà...the only lingering question is an aesthetic one: if one person suggests the colour is "highlighter" yellow can that ever be unseen?

I prefer to think it is buttercup yellow. Hmmmm does this mean its surf song must be from the HMS Pinafore? I will check in with the intrepid surfer and keep you all posted.

That leash rope is too long. I'm worried you might get a toe twisted off on a drop knee cutty.

First surf happened this a.m. and this what our intrepid surfer said,

"So happy with that board. I’m not overly attached to many material possessions, but that board is so perfect. It just felt so right. Amazing. "

Two things, first how do you know how long it is? by brand? Second what should be the length of a leash for a given board? Well maybe three do toes actually get twisted off in drop knee turns?

I believe the refernce here was to the leash rope (which is visible if you zoom in). Which sharp-eyed Waikikichan pointed out and as I examine it more closely tend to agree that it is a potential digit trap.

Caveat emptor dudes.

Interesting so one more question, How do you put the leash rope on the board for a leash plug like that? I have never seen one like that. The opening is so small.

I've used that paper clip method before.

And indeed the leash rope adjustment is pending, although not for drop knee turns, but to avoid damage to the fin box in larger surf.

Is that fitting a feature of the fin box or is it just drilled through after fin box is installed? Looks like in the above board there is a sleeve for the rope to go through protecting and sealing the foam. Otherwise it would be difficult to seal the hole. So are these sold and what are they called?
