Surfing Waves

Hi I have just bought a new noserider 9´4 with a square tail.

My former noseriders were 9´8 square tail and 10´ pin tail, while my progressive longboards have been 9´0, 9´2 pin tail and 9´5 pin tail (I also have had short boards)

I´m going down in noserider size in order to be able to turn it as well as noseride it, so hopefully I will be able to use it as a progressive noserider.

What is your preference for noserider sizes and why?

I think a wide nose, soft rounded rails and the right Fin, make the biggest difference once the board is over 9'.
I like a really upright fin, for the stall pivot or fade turn, going into the maneuver. And a wide base, for the stability and drive, while riding the nose.

All you’re missing is a 9’3”, 9’6” and 9’7” in either a thumb tail, diamond tail and/or swallow.

Yep the fin is important too. I can really feel the difference on boards from 9 - 9´4.

A while back in Japan, when noseriding got popular, all the Japanese were ordering 9'3". I was like, "why is everyone ordering 9'3"s ?" They told me "That is what Joel Tudor rides".
So I told them:
Are you the same size as Joel Tudor ?
Do you surf at the same surf spot/wave as Joel Tudor does ?
Do you even surf like Joel Tudor surfs ?

Ask yourself the same question but in another sport.
What's the best golf club size / shaft flex ?
What's the best motorcycle ( or to be more precise, what's the best tire Dunlop, Michelin, Bridgestone ? )
What's the best fishing lure ?

It depends.

One thing I can say is length is only one of many variables that goes into how a board will ride ( noseride ). You can get 10 boards from 10 different shapers all exactly 9'3", and they ALL will ride totally different.

BUT to answer your question, for me my best noserider size is 8'8". The length matches my gate / stride when cross stepping to the nose, since I am only 5'3". But an 8'8" is not legal for competition, so usually on something 9'1" I have to take an extra half kick step at the end.

That´s right it all depends on who you are, where you surf, what level you´re at, and what shaper made your board.

Sometimes there can be interesting point of views, when surfers share their experiences.

The steps and the turning on a 9´4 or 9´2 is different from a large 10 foot. I have to do the opposite with foot placement from you when I go down in board size. But I can see your point with the extra half kick step. Perhaps competitions rules are not perfect, since it is not measured by the surfers size and board size?
