Surfing Waves

hello guys,

just looking for some help from guys more experienced with longer boards.
the longest board i have is a 7ft odesea log, which i ride on smaller days. recently I have been getting frustrated with not being able to turn it very well.
I am looking at getting a hard board, in the 8-9 foot range that will be nicer to turn.(I am aware that the board I end up with will basically be a nose rider, but I want it to be as nice to turn as possible )

I am looking at the Colapintail by CJ Nelson- both the mid-length and longboard versions. anyone got any experience with these or any other boards to recommend?

FYI I surf small and pathetic beachbreaks on the channel coast of England 90% of the time

Could please explain more by what you mean "nicer to turn" ? Do you mean to do a more classic drop knee turn ?

What about the 7 ft. Odysea are you frustrated with ? I know you said "turning", but what aspect of it ? The rubber fins flex too much, the full boxy rails making it hard to get on rail / set your edge, or it's waterlogged ?

Insuggest to you, you reconsider buying the colapintail especially if you are challenged in turning, an you are riding weak surf, a broader squash tail or much more rounded tail. Strong pintails are made for down the line speed, ( you won‘t get that in weaker waves) the pin also is a catch point in turning at lower speeds.

The broader tails more forgiving , you will need to learn back foot pressure , and really much of what you need to know should be showing in your soft board progress, but you haven‘t fallen for the advertising trap and gone the short board way.

I would go the way of the LOG. I agree that a pintail is maybe not the best tail design for the types of waves you will be surfing.

its the boxy rails don't like, so looking for a more refined rail line. Also it is 72ltrs of very floaty foam at 7 foot which I'm sure isn't that conducive to turning.

Thanks for the advice on pintails guys, any other boards you recommend?

im around 80kg, 176 lbs
5'10 tall

CJ Nelson is an extremely talented surfer, but those turns can be made on the tails i suggested, you will note that he uses foot movement and positioning and placement of weight on his feet and over the fins to drive a turn! The waves are better shaped and with more power per size than the usual day where you surf, a pintail at your skill level will be a point ( pun intended ) where you will catch and bog.
Try pushing your turn on your current board don‘t feel the limitations try to push through them.
Also forget about lean turns use your feet your weight when you can crank the soft through a turn you will surf a good board so much better!

I know McCoy designs well, the pin is not as abrupt as the Colapintail so slightly more suited, EPS and epoxy so lighter and stronger.
Price good.
The Stewart a better board with the square tail a bit more severe on the price , also EPS and epoxy, so similar durability.
You could also look at the Torq range, possibilities there too!
So choice is still up up to you!
