Surfing Waves

Hi Guys,

I believe this questions is mostly for the Aussie guys around here
My local break is Rainbaw bay/Green Mount in Coolangatta which i surf 2-4 times a week on a Longboard in the past year, so I'm addicted to the long peeling waves of the points.
I'm heading with the Family for few days holiday next week on the Sunshine Coast and trying to decide where would be the best spot to book accommodation to get fast access to a long peeling wave on a point break. I heard that Noossa Heads points are world class but not very consistent. Is there any other great Point break for longboarding? what about Alexandra Headland? Or Moffat beach?

The Noosa breaks are easily the best /most accessible in the region. Especially if you walk around from first point and escape the crowds. The beach ‘from’ Perigean /Coolum /Maroochydore / Alexandra headland has plenty of breaks but not so much long peelers, just the usual beachie stuff.

The Bluff (Alexandra point) is pretty good though. There is also also a break called Geriatrics Reef opposite Katoa St at Alexandra Headland that can be fun for longboarders (hence the name...)

Tbh Noosa is the best for surfing but it’s not really my kind of place, very ‘chi chi’ and high end pointless homewares. Has some good cafes I guess, but Main Beach isn’t really that good. It does have the river to play around in and is nice enough for the family. Around the corner at Sunshine is more relaxed (for me!)

Alexandra Head or along that stretch of beach is much less upmarket (for good or bad) and Noosa isn’t that far away is the swell is working (30 min). Plus most of the breaks are easy walk out the door and you are there; Noosa needs slightly more effort. Alexandra Headlands is much more suburban though

Not sure that helps! It’s been a few years since I’ve surfed there. Given what you are used to, I wouldn’t get your expectations too high

Thanks for the detailed reply DTC, it is very helpful. I was actually looking at a place in Sunshine Beach, it does look nice and more chilled. Same as you mate, I've been in Noosa last time 6 years ago before i emerged myself back in Surfing and don't like all the fancy stylish area, too much for me. I live in the Byron Shire so prefer the more relaxed quite atmosphere.
I guess its not such a big drive if the Noosa conditions are right, just prefer something more accessible with peelers, maybe Alex Heads is the go, will check it out - thanks for the tips. I got used to surf in one of the top spots and everywhere i go looks not as good as home
B.T.W. - in regards to another area - have you ever been in crescent head? any good peelers over there?

The beach at Sunshine is pretty open - its a long wide beach facing south-ish and not much shelter or no headlands for protection. So it can be a bit rough and windy, but its not terrible or dangerous (unless there is a strong southerly). Noosa Main Beach is far more sheltered, but there are no/few waves on the beach itself and it gets deep very quickly, so its pretty boring for playing in the water. But its like 10 minutes over to Noosa Heads from Sunshine (albeit that parking is a pain near Hastings St/Noosa beach), so you can go over to Noosa if Sunshine is too windy or whatever.

If Noosa is working or even waist high, its definitely a lot of fun from First Point all the way around the headland. On the other hand, Sunshine has heaps of breach breaks, so you can probably find one that isnt very crowded. And you dont feel like you have to wear boat shoes and wear a panama hat while clutching at a ring of European car keys and talking about private schools

Sorry, havent been to Crescent Head. I know there are a lot of surfers there so there must be good waves, but dont know anything about the area. I think the great white season has passed....

Crescent Head ca long way from Noosa etc, 3/4 of the way back to Sydney, very longboard friendly and very crowded especially during school holidays, it is a bit of a Zoo a lot of clueless, tracking everywhere, then the locals who know every subtle ripple of the wave. Take your place somewhere in your range, There are lots of heads Scoots Grassy Hat, Broken , Evans,, Nambucca , all of which can work, avoid shark hours or being alone at any of them, it is much more Sharks than it used to be, any hipster surf blood in you then Byron Bay will suit, among the leashless crew, and the the bucket list fillers. Having said that you might just strike one in prime with few out!.
If that is the case, do not bother to buy a lottery ticket....... you will have used your luck!

Thanks for the info, i was thinking about crescent heads for future trip - but only as i hoped it would not be busy due to its location, but guess its not - i think i'll give it a pass at this stage based on this info.
I live in Ocean Shores just between Byron and Cooli so tend to surf mostly in Rainbow/greenmount where i work or sometimes on the Pass at the weekend with my kids, but i must say as much as the pass is good i can't stand going there - super crowded and aggressive with too many leash-less "Hipsters" as they call themselves with there fancy mustache and open surf vest showing off their tats haha. My kids almost got hit by a flying board from one of them. I tried many of the points you mentioned, like Brunswick, Evans, Broken, but probably not on the right days with the right conditions as they weren't working for me and my longboard they are not really the classical log peelers.
I ended up booking in Noosaville - hopefully will work out good with the right conditions.

I understand Noosa is flooded with posh people and expensive accommodation and restaurants..
But what a paradise is the National Park around the headland! And what a great background for your surf.
In south east Queensland, from 2ft up the wave is the most perfect for longboards hands down. It's crowded, yes, but just like Coolangatta.
Then at sunset, you just sit on a bench 3m from the people surfing First Point and enjoy the show with your family and a cold beer. Magic.

Unfortunately Noosa has been affected by the bush fires of the last days.
People have been evacuated and someone lost his home.
Other fires have affected also places near Peregian Beach and more fires are active on the ranges behind the coast.
The next few days seem to be potentially catastrophic for many places along the East coast.
Keep an eye on the news!

Thanks for the heads up mate, been following it last few days, very sad and unfortunate. We are experiencing the same all around us, been living in a cloud of smoke in the past few days, hopefully it will get better very soon.
