Skating to help longboarding?

Hi everyone!
I remember reading somewhere in the forum about skating helping with surfing. I got myself a steal of a deal on a Carver board (Point Break model) with CX trucks. Had it a few months but am only now thinking about using it.
For you skating folks, are there any moves I can practice to help me with my longboarding? I'm not really sure what I can do to maximize the benefits of dry land training. I think I remember reading somewhere that skating might be more beneficial for shortboarders? Maybe I imagined it. I'm a total skating noob with very basic abilities, but, if you've got advice, tips or tricks (well, maybe no tricks), I'd love to hear them!
Thanks!
