Benefits of Razor Fins?

Postby saltdog77 » Sun Aug 05, 2018 8:31 pm

I ordered a D Style fin off Amazon designed by Mason Dyer and made by Captain fin. I wanted to get the feel of what it would be like to ride a traditional D fin on my log. When it arrived the thing that struck me about it was how incredibly tapered and sharp the thing was. Which leads me to ask is there any significant added benefit to being sharp (narrow and tapered to thin edge) other than making a nice clean cut for the doctor to stitch up?

What is the make and model of the board you're going to put that D-fin on ?

In my opinion, no. Or, at least, no for 95% of surfers (if you are in the top 5% then perhaps). I always sand down my fins (front and back edge) so I can run my finger along them without pain or likelihood of cut. Yes it may I guess increase drag, but the increase in drag from a 1mm edge on a fin has to be inconsequential in the context of the drag from everything else

Even if I'm wrong about the performance issue - and perhaps I am - I am more than happy to accept the reduced performance in return for the increased safety.
