Surfing Waves

Hi, I am thinking about getting a 10" HPD MTP single fin for my longboard. It's a 9' x 22.8" x 3" Gary Wilson Butternut with a squash tail. Anybody ever use this fin? How did it surf? What conditions did it work best in? Thanks, Jeff

10 inch is too big for your 9 footer. That template's area vs. the area on a Greenough 4A is way different. Plus the tip on the Greenough flexes, the MTP is stiff. If you still "believe" bigger will lead to better noserides, then go with the 9.5" rather than the 10".

There was a full set of answers about fins on your other post and a good rule of thumb to follow is about 1" of fin per foot of board vary this slightly if you consider side bites by going a little smaller 10" in a stiff fin just too much to drive in turns.
I also suggest you read the fin primer in the forum so you have an understanding of FINS, note too, nose riding is not so much about fins but being able to set the rail and tail.

Yes ( sort of ), I use the Kanoa Dahlin "Miss Lucy" and the Island Fin Designs "IFN". (which I believe the "N" stems from David Nuuhiwa ) Both are basically the same template as the MTP.

Fine, for it's intending purpose, classic pivot turns and noserides.

Reef and Point breaks. Not too steep with a lazy shoulder.

Jeffdrisc, instead of asking round-about questions, how about you tell us what YOU want the fin to do. To me it's surfs "fine", but I don't surf like you and you don't surf like me. Where do YOU surf, how do YOU like to turn, what is YOUR purpose/intent for the MTP fin if you get it ?
What's wrong with the Greenough 4A you bought ?

I haven't bought the greenough yet. I have surfed it before on an 8'6 & liked it. Got the 9'0 & I'm trying to decide on a fin for it. Considering the greenough, but open to others as well.
I'm looking to really get down trimming, then progress to left go rights & noseriding. I surf a beach break. Wouldn't call it mushy, but def not a steep wave either. Looking to surf mostly knee to chest high waves.

If you're not skilled in drop knee or pivot turns, I would recommend you save your money ( and lower back ) and learn on the Greenough 4A or standard template fins. After you can properly stall and cross step, then get Nuuhiwa fin. I wouldn't surf the MTP in beach break.

See if you can borrow a few fins and see which sort work best for you.

Play with forward and backward placement in the centre box and see what that gives you , forward = looseness in turns, back tightens up the turns .
