Surfing Waves

Hi, New to the forum. I have a 9'0 that I plan on surfing mostly as a single fin, but it has a 2+1 option that I might use during the winter when the US east coast surf gets a little bigger. I really like the greenough 4A. If I got a 9"', could I use this not only as a single fin, but also as a 2+1? If so, how big should the side bites be? Looking to save $ & not have to buy a couple of center fins. Thanks! Jeff

I really like the Greenough 4A .............. as a Single. I don't recommend it for 2+1. I would get a different 8" fin that you can move forward or back depending on the conditions in conjunction with the side bites/fins.
You didn't say if the sides were FCS, Futures, etc.
You didn't say what type of tail design or model of board you own.

I use the 4a 8.5" as my go ti single in my fairly low volume 9'2" performance longboard. I use futures sidebites that are 50/50 foil quad rears stretch copies and a cutaway 6.5" center for my 2+1 ehen it is bigger and I need some grip and that is plenty of fin. 4a has a wide base and in a 2+1 makes for a drivey albeit tracky board that doesnt respond as well as with a narrower based center like a cutaway. I going for a surf right after this; optimistically I have the 2+1 in but the single isn't far in case conditions are too soft.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have a Gary Wilson butternut with a squash tail. It is a custom shape with an option for fsc side bites. From everything I have read online it is best surfed as a single, but the 2+1 setup interests me for winter surf. With that said, I probably would not be surfing it in anything over head high.

Rode this setup after posting the other day and had just about the best longboard sesh I've ever had....head to a couple feet OH that day, I had one wave in particular that I rode around 150m before it closed out in front of me so I cut back and rode another 150m or so....first wave I've ever done that on to that degree....via pumps and cutting back/staying with the pocket I rode the left from far out back and connected to the peak down the beach that breaks right.....never done that or seen anyone do that before so that was pretty awesome.

This is the fin setup for me so long as there is some push in the waves....works a charm.

Spray painted my board last week as well (front yard, less than perfect but touchups are easy )....that's new sandy finish purple paint.....I swear that it is faster than it was before with the gloss coat finish but who can tell.
