Ok so my log which is 9'10 has a 8inch fin on it. I want a longer one. I'm having issues figuring out to get a 9 or 10 inch. What do y'all think?

You did not explain if your set up was Single or 2+1. For single, easy rule is inch for foot. So a 9'10", you can look for 9.5". I think 10" is too much. 9.75" are rare but some makers have them. If you are running side-bites, then 8" was fine.

Why did you "want" a longer fin ? Was the 8" fin all the way back in the box ?

no its a single fin. and I asked the people at the shop and everyone suggested the 10'. Ive used it and its night and day difference. working great on the board.

all the way forward

Then that is why you should have gone for a 9.5" fin rather than the 10.0". You have the fin all the way in the front right now, you can't make the fin feel any looser, only stiffer. It's better to get a fin that works good in the center of the box that you can make looser ( move forward ) or stiffer ( move further back ) depending on the conditions and surf break.

well bummer. im stuck with this one now. My thought was cause my board is only 2 inches away from being 10 feet that a 10 inch would be correct. It seems to work so much better then the 8 inch I had on it originally.

You said the 10" was working great and you are allowed to buy a 9.5 " I can't see a problem.

Just curious, what was the problem you experienced with the smaller fin?

My longboard is 9'2" and has an 7" center fin and 2 small side fins, I only used it a couple of times but everything seems fine.

Or is this problem mainly related to noseriding? I use my board as a big shortboard and only walk forwards when the wave loses power to stay in it a bit longer.

it just wasn't cutting in when I would turn. I also slipped out a lot. Just didn't ride right.

Yea the 10 seems to be working great with no issues. I mean my board is 2 inches from 10 inches so is that a big deal?

Hey if it works for you it is no big deal! Ride what you want to ride how am when you want to ride.
More fins add more options, some of which work better in different conditions. Sort of like playing golf with one club! BTW that's about my golf standard

2+1 us a different story than single fin alone....in my 9'1" I've been using a 6in with two sidebites 3.75in. Think total fin area, either all in one fin or spread over 3.

You're not "stuck" with that fin as like Jaffa said, you can always get another fin. Lucky you don't have glassed in fins that are permanent. I have boxes and boxes full of fins. It's fun to experiment. It's also good to bring more than one to the beach just in case conditions change.

Speaking of Changing, the reason why I bring up location of the fin in the box, is to have adjustability. If your fin is too big, you need to run it forward in the box. If it was too small, you need to run it further back ( that's why I asked about your 8" fin,if it was in the back ).

It goes along with proper frame fit on a bicycle ( I worked at bike shops and surf shops )
If your frame is too Large, the saddle needs to be bottomed out ( like your fin being all the way forward ).

If you frame is too Small, the seat post has to be way out.

A proper frame size allows the ride adjustability if the need arises.

All Mohawk needs at this point is a fine toothed saw and 10 minutes later he'll have a 9.5 inch (24 cm) fin! (Smile)
