Hey guys,

I'm buying a 2nd hand Surftech miranda 9.4 for my girlfriend. She is quite small - Do you think 9.4 is too big?

Random question. I'm a bit newb with the longboards.

Thanks heaps!

Jamie

Yes and no...(and depends on her size/weight) - and I'm assuming she is a learner

No - its nice and big and will be easy to learn on, stable, easy to paddle - all things that are goodness. Small people can surf big boards no problem.

Yes - its going to be hard for a small person to carry and (in particular) control such a big board in any kind of surf.

I suppose the answer is that there are clear benefits in her having a big board but that 9ft4 is probably bigger than she needs and the benefits of going bigger than she 'needs' are minimal, while there are some downsides

But if she is surfing small waves or staying in the white water, then it should be fine. I've seen 10yr kids cruise around on 9ft longboards no problems

And its a much better choice than a 6ft board

Thanks mate!!

well she's never surfed a longboard before but she's definitely a competent/immediate skilled surfer!!

The reviews say it's quite light & easy to manage. Does that change anything?

Dino is a friend of mine. Do you have the clearish Ultraflex model or the Red/Yellow or Blue/orange Surftech ? I she is a intermediate surfer that can do cutbacks on her shortboard, then she'll enjoy the narrower tail and sharper rails compared most "Logs". You say she is "small", that's not clear. What is her height and weight ?

ah, ok - if she can already surf then the only real issue is handling the board given its size. But she presumably has board handling skills that will take her a long way. Waikikichan will give you a good answer

Of course, there is the question - has she agreed with this board (and you just want to know whether its a good choice) or are you going to spring it on her (and cross your fingers she will like it)? In my experience, the latter can end badly - one inch off what she wants and
